Here’s a sneak peek at VIVA ACAPULCO: Detective Emilia Cruz Book 9.

“I’m helping Silvio buy real estate,” Kurt said. “Not going to war.”
Dealing with Silvio is the same thing. Emilia bit back the retort. “Hear me out,” she said instead in an effort to sound reasonable. “First, I’ve been there. The property is a wreck.”
Kurt laughed. “It’s historic.”
“A wreck,” Emilia insisted. “It’s huge and it needs new everything. Half the roof is gone. The plumbing is a mess. You know, somebody died when the water pump exploded. That’s why it’s been empty for so long.”
“So I heard,” Kurt said
mildly.
“Silvio is going to ask you to pay for repairs. It’ll take a fortune to make it livable.”
“We already discussed finances,” Kurt said. “Repairs are his
department.”
“You really think he told you everything?” Emilia scoffed. “Did he tell you that the place used to be a federale safe house?”
“Yes, he
did.”
"Well, then." Emilia heard a note of triumph in her voice. "Silvio never should have asked you to get involved."
They were driving around the bay now, the
midday sky almost painfully bright from the reflection off the ocean. Massive white pillars loomed in the near distance that resolved into hi-rise hotels and apartments presiding over a perfect view of water and horizon.
“Let’s be honest about what’s really bothering you.” Kurt glanced sideways at her even as he braked for a
red light. “Your brother has something to do with this place, doesn’t he?
Her brother. It was still hard for Emilia to accept that she had a brother, much less one who made her skin crawl. Rafa Gamboa was a deep cover federale who played his role as a drug cartel fixer all too well. Handsome and glib, he was a gifted
actor with no conscience, no shame, no soul.
“He met his snitches there,” Emilia admitted. “Who knows what else. The place is cursed.”
